Global demand for AI and semiconductor equipment is heating up rapidly. Taiwanese companies exhibiting at the Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF) revealed on the 27th that Japanese manufacturers are actively extending cooperation invitations to Taiwanese firms, hoping to jointly build out machine tool equipment and key components and to create a shared platform for AI smart-manufacturing equipment and components — capturing a business opportunity worth hundreds of billions.
The Japanese government earlier announced a ban on exports of high-end machine tools to mainland China, and mainland China in turn announced controls on exports of high-precision machine tools. Most mainland Chinese machine tool builders were absent from this year's show. Amid mounting global trade barriers, orders from North America and Southeast Asia have shifted in large volumes to Taiwanese machine tool makers since last quarter.
Industry sources noted that Japanese machine tool order intake has surged this year, leaving manufacturers with full order books. Combined with the widening global supply gap for high-end machine tools caused by export controls in both Japan and mainland China, Japanese firms are actively looking to Taiwan for lower-cost components or component-processing equipment. HIWIN (2049), Takisawa, Quaser and Tongtai are among the groups expected to benefit; each has already launched cooperation programmes and begun receiving substantial cooperation orders.
HIWIN Chairman Cho Wen-heng noted that exchanges and cooperation between the Taiwanese and Japanese gear industries continue to deepen. The Japan Gear Manufacturers Association (JGMA) recently led some 30 industry representatives to visit the new plant of the group's affiliate Meitrise in the Fengshan Industrial Zone in Hsinchu, where they exchanged views on gear processing technology, manufacturing experience and industry direction. At this show, Meitrise is exhibiting small and medium-sized high-precision gear generating grinding machines aimed at the electric vehicle, AI humanoid robot and semiconductor equipment industries, and has invited JGMA members to visit, hoping to extend industry exchange into technical cooperation and commercial opportunities. More than 200 groups of Japanese customers booked visits to the Meitrise booth at this show alone.
Cho added that in addition to the two machines scheduled for delivery by the end of this year, four more have completed technical specification discussions and are moving toward 2027 order targets, with potential orders totalling more than NT$100 million.
Takisawa is exhibiting in partnership with Japan's Takisawa. Notably, the Japanese partner is showing a turn-mill multi-tasking machine with a tool spindle and an oval-turning machine. The latter is aimed at turning the harmonic reducers required for humanoid robots, a segment in which it holds the largest market share in Japan; orders are already booked into the third quarter of next year.
Takisawa President Lin Chen-yung revealed that the company plans to debut the oval-turning machine at the Taipei International Machine Tool Show next March and formally introduce it to the Taiwan market, targeting opportunities in processing equipment for humanoid robot key components in Taiwan. Several Taiwanese manufacturers have already placed reservations.
Tongtai is exhibiting together with its subsidiary Asia Pacific Elite (APEC), showing an ultrasonic hard-and-brittle material processing machine and a vertical five-axis machining centre, aiming squarely at the market for small and medium-sized machines that Japan lacks for AI semiconductor material processing. Within two days of the show's opening, several Japanese manufacturers had entered cooperation talks and placed inquiries. Tongtai's Japanese tooling partner also plans to establish a sampling and application centre in Nagoya, expected to open by the end of the year.
Quaser President Hsieh Tien-hsin said the company's overall order visibility now extends to the second quarter of next year, and it is currently taking orders for the third quarter of next year and beyond. In his view, Japan's export controls on high-end five-axis machines to mainland China, together with mainland China's reciprocal export control measures, mean concrete order-transfer benefits for Taiwanese manufacturers.![]()
